FOWell for carbon storage monitoring

Downhole fibre feeds acoustic, temperature and strain measurements to surface instruments and dedicated software. Storage operators review seismic profiles, plume changes and well-condition events across injection work.

About FOWell for carbon storage monitoring

Following carbon injection involves examining both the storage formation and the well used to reach it. FOWell is the integrated well measurement solution from FEBUS Optics. Its carbon-storage application combines downhole fibre, surface acquisition instruments and dedicated software for monitoring before, during and after injection.

The A1 acoustic interrogator supplies distributed vibration measurements. Selected temperature and strain instruments add thermal changes and deformation readings. FOWell Suite, the well monitoring and visualization software, brings the acquired measurements into the project workflow. Vertical seismic profiles support assessment of cap-rock integrity, while repeated profiles provide data for examining changes in the carbon plume. Permanent fibre placement supports continuing measurements, with acquisition equipment at the surface and selected connected system interfaces.

Storage teams examine the measurements for migration signals, microseismicity, induced seismicity and represented deformation changes. The received records give specialists a basis for investigating the affected well or formation and reviewing the injection campaign. Implementation includes the suitable downhole cable and the selected instrument configuration. Project training, operational support and maintenance arrangements assist the team throughout its represented storage-monitoring programme.

Questions and answers

How does the carbon-storage installation acquire measurements downhole?

A suitable fibre is deployed down the well and connected to surface acquisition equipment. Permanent cable placement supports continuing measurements.

What does a repeated vertical seismic profile contribute to carbon-storage review?

A vertical seismic profile supports assessment of cap-rock integrity. Repeated profiles provide data for examining changes in the carbon plume.

Which instruments contribute acoustic and deformation inputs for the storage well?

The A1 acoustic interrogator provides vibration measurements. Selected G1 instruments add strain and temperature readings to the FOWell Suite workflow.

Does the storage application also examine injection-related seismic activity?

The represented workflow includes microseismicity, induced seismicity and deformation changes. Specialists review those measurements alongside the well and formation records.

How is this deployment priced?

What does a deployment cost?

For 1 site with 10 monitored assets in France, IoT Apps estimates $3,300 – $11k in the first year and $300 – $1,000 every year after. This is an estimate based on comparable deployments, not a quote from FEBUS Optics.
