A modular onboard gateway brings 5G WiFi, passenger counting, infotainment, surveillance, ticketing, and fleet tracking to buses, for operators retrofitting fleets or OEM installations.

Public safety & emergency response depend on conditions and assets that change between scheduled inspections. Changes in equipment condition may emerge without a clear indication of which site, zone, or asset needs attention. Municipal, public-works, and service teams often rely on manual readings and disconnected systems, making it hard to compare current conditions with normal operation. This delays response and increases the chance of downtime, waste, safety exposure, or service disruption.
Connected Bus collects location, movement, and asset-status signals across public safety & emergency response and sends the readings to a secure cloud application. Dashboards and configurable rules show asset health, operating state, and abnormal trends, retaining history by site, zone, or asset. This gives municipal, public-works, and service teams the context to inspect or service the affected asset, helping them shorten response time and protect service continuity and document the response.
Each bus is equipped with a modular onboard gateway/router (OBU) that integrates multiple connectivity technologies: dual 5G/eSIM modems (or 4G/5G), dual-band WiFi (802.11ax / WiFi 6/6E), GPS, Ethernet and serial interfaces, and often multiple LoRaWAN concentrator modules. The gateway supports redundancy (multiple SIMs), VPN connections, and secure communication. On the software side, the data flows into Wavecom’s IoT Manager / Multi-Tenant Platform which manages all devices, provides dashboards, maps, telemetry (location, speed, direction), alerts, passenger counting, captive portals for WiFi access, CCTV or surveillance integration, ticketing system API interfaces, and more. The platform also supports zero-touch provisioning (ZTP) to streamline deployment, remote diagnostics, firmware updates, and resilient SD-WAN management for reliability.
